We are pleased to bring you the Best of the Fest from this season’s San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. We are featuring three must-see films throughout the month of February.
First up on Thursday, February 1st is My Neighbor Adolf
About the film: In this dark comedy, cranky and and misanthropic, Marek Polsky has survived the war and the camps. He’s now resettled in a South American village, where he seems content to tend his roses, play chess games in his head, and mutter to himself. But it’s 1960, Adolf Eichmann has just been seized in Argentina, and now Polsky is suspiciously eyeing the secretive German-speaking elderly man who has moved in next door. It’s alarming: The man bears an uncanny resemblance to Adolf Hitler. Not only that, this ostensible neighbor “Herzog” has a German shepherd, a penchant for painting, an expansionist agenda, and a ferocious temper. When no one takes Polsky’s suspicions seriously, he decides to take matters into his own hands, daring to establish a wary acquaintanceship with the neighbor in order to gain positive proof of Herzog’s true, monstrous identity. They begin a cat and mouse game of trying to get to know eachother, finding out who the other really is, and perhaps even becoming friends.

• Thursday, February 8: 1341 Frames of War and Love
See a beautifully laid out story of Israel’s struggles and victoies, told though the negatives of Israel’s most celebrated war photographer Micha Bar-Am, who for decades was the country’s photo correspondent for The New York Times. For a year and a half, he and his archivist wife Orna allowed director Ran Tal to enter their vast archive. As they mine this extraordinary trove of over 500,000 photos, the film seamlessly intertwines a historical narrative of a country with Bar-Am’s personal reflections on the psychological and personal toll of bearing witness to multiple wars. 1341 Frames of Love and War is a complex love letter to the beauty and horror of photographic imagery and to the country whose image Bar-Am helped shape.
• Thursday, February 15: Queen of the Deuce
From pre-WWII Greece to her meteoric rise through the Times Square porn circuit in the 1970s, Queen of the Deuce tells the fascinating story of Chelly Wilson, trailblazing entrepreneur and unconventional matriarch, who built an empire based on desire. It is a wild offbeat tale of a Jewish grandmother who always true to herself, survived the war, sustain her Jewish Greek roots and built herself a pornographic legacy.
